It probably wouldn't be every week, but hopefully at least twice a month or so. Basically, I would share stories sent to me by listeners and readers of this blog and the website. What does everyone think? I can only do it if you send me your experiences, so please do so!

An American Haunting

So I saw An American Haunting last night. Overall, I give the movie a "B". It was a pretty faithful recreation of the legend, the acting was good, as were the special effects.

Unfortunately, it "went there" as I feared it might, presenting my least favorite theory of the Bell Witch (if you've read Monahan's book, you know what I mean). There's not evidence of this at all, making it a libelous accusation. In fairness, there is a disclaimer at the end stating that this is only one theory. But it would have been a better movie without this.

Bell Witch on the Big Screen

An American Haunting, a movie based on the Bell Witch legend, is slated for release this Friday. Apparently, the movie is based on Brent Monahan's book, The Bell Witch: An American Haunting, of which I was not a huge fan due to some unfounded accusations he made toward John Bell. My apologies. Since I'm attending college in North Carolina, I don't get back to Tennessee as often as I'd like, and just don't have a chance to visit haunted sites. E-mails about haunted places have dwindled as well. But hopefully this summer I'll have more time for updates. In the meantime, check out the message board, and keep checking this space.

Allison House in Piney Flats

Reader Angel e-mails:

Me and my husband while dating went to a secluded spot in Sullivan county with several football player friends. We went there as a group. Funny how the only ones that made it out without actually seeing anything was us, the ones who waited outside. However, we did hear footsteps sounding like a animal moving in for the kill. Twigs shattered, leaves crumbled we both heard the screams of the two that went in at the same time. We all ran to the car, the two big football guys said they saw something come out of the shadows of the moonlight sky that was visible because of fire of the orphanage that burnt the roof. Anyone else had experiences with Allison house e mail direct angel9088 at yahoo.com. It is no longer there. But it occurred around the area of his sightings.

During my high school days, I was on my way home to the Ridgefields community which is just across the river from Netherland Inn. I was just coming from a small HS party. Around 9pm on my way home, I was passing by the grounds of the old Kingsport Hospital and the Netherland Inn. And without warning, I blacked out at the wheel.

By a miracle, I regained consciousness. But what makes this weird is that I had blacked out for about 3-4 minutes, I was still on the road, and had driven well into the Ridgefields community, with was than a minute from home. This is turning to cross over the river bridge, continuing up hill the main neighborhood street, around a street circle, and then a few other turns. When I regained my senses, I felt uneasy and cold. Almost a small case of shock. At no time, did I consume any drugs or alcohol that night. I had always been a clean cut kid. I only had fast food and coke that night.

To this day, I cannot find an explaination for my blackout. All I know is that someone was watching over me.

Bethberei Stories

An anonymous reader e-mails concerning Bethberei Church in Lewisburg:

I visited the Bethberei Church 3 times, and each time I felt unwelcomed. On my first two visits my companions and I encountered very strange and disturbing accounts.

1st visit- We simply drove in front of the church and stopped, without getting out, just look around. When in front of the church, our car became cold, engine temp dropped, and the engine started to spudder.

2nd visit- A couple new companions accompanied me to the church. This time we entered late one summer night. The outside and most of the church were warm. When we approached the front of the chapel, I became very cold. One of my friends stood next to me and looked around toward the back of the chapel to a small stairway. She then went into shock and ran out. She claimed to have seen a figure walk out of the top room and then jumped off the top and appeared to had been hanging from the lighting fixture. Another companion claimed to have seen the fixture swing at that moment.

Stories and rumors that I gathered from other visitors, most likely tall tales to scare kids from going:

A high school kid from Murfreesboro/Eagleville area visited the church one night by himself. Nothing inside happened from the report. But on his drive home, a strange smell started to build within his car. When the smell started to become overwhelming, he stopped checked the interior and exterior of his car for any road kill or bad food. Then he checked his trunk...the report I gathered was that he discovered a mutilated torso in the trunk. He slammed the trunk and ran to the nearest house to call his parents. When his parents met him at the car and examined the trunk, nothing was discovered.

Heard rumors that the across the road cemetery was formerly the original grounds of a slave church. One night, a group of Klan members burned the church down while a service was being conducted. Due to the times and poor record keeping, many of the graves were left blank. Some speculate that many of the remains were mixed up when buried. That is the reason visitors to the church see figures walking among the graves, in search of their rightful remains.

Another rumor I encountered about Bethberei Church is that it lies on the old gathering grounds of a witch coven. It is speculated that grounds also carry the graves of many of the coven members, which were only marked by trees, rocks, and stumps. Some say that a few of the graves were violently moved to make room for the church cemetery when it was first established. And that even the church lies on top of many of the graves, possibly directly under the pulpit.

Merry Christmas!

I know I have been neglecting this blog, and I apologize. I don't know why because I have had encounters--15 to 16 not counting the dreams I have had. I always just blew them off. Anyway, below is one of my experiences.

My daughter was on a field trip to Carnton Plantation, an antebellum home that was in the midst of the Battle of Franklin during the Civil War. Anyway, I arrived late and they had already gone into the home so I sat in my car waiting for them to come outside. While I waited I saw a Confederate General dressed in period piece with his jacket unbuttoned standing on the balcony. He had his saber on and his hat. I was too far away to see his face, but he did have a sweeping moustache. I just assumed it was a tour guide that had taken a break. Later when I had caught up with the group I asked my daughter if she had seen the "General". She replied that she hadn't. When we were on the porch I said something about the General to several people that worked there and no one seemed to know anything about him. Some women were dressed in period costumes but most were in street clothes. They said that no one ever goes on the balcony. I didn't think anything about it. Since most were volunteers I assumed they may not know for sure.

About a year later I was reading a book about hauntings in TN and came across a story of a Confederate General that some have seen at Carnton. I realized that I had seen a ghost. Shortly, thereafter, I returned to Carnton and asked the tour guide if anyone dressed in uniforms when they gave tours and he said no...the only time was when they had enactors doing the battle. Then I asked if the home was haunted and was told that was a bunch of crap. That no one that worked there had ever seen a ghost. Well, I did!

Nashville Ghost Tour

Saturday I went on a ghost tour in Nashville. It was very interesting, covering some stories I knew about (like the State Capitol building and St. Mary's Catholic Church) and some I was not familar with (a haunted former club near Printers Alley and a haunted parking garage). Our tour guide did a wonderful job, and I heartily recommend taking this tour if you are in the Nashville area.

I don't want to go into too much detail because I don't want to ruin the tour for anyone. But I would like to share the following photos I took on the tour. Plenty of orbs! Back when he was in high school, there was a house in North Chattanooga that was run down and abandoned. It was abandoned by all but the devil worshippers. If you looked through the cracks of the boarded up windows, you could see the red pentagram that was on the floor, as well as candles. My dad and a friend got back in their car to leave and as they were driving forward, a man appeared in front of their car. The back alley they parked in was well lit but you could not see any features about this man. As quickly as he appeared, he disappeared. The two looked at each other simultaneously and his friend sped out of the alley behind the house. My dad has never been back since.

Oklanona Exit - Johnson City

On Exit 28 off Interstate 26 (exit from the east) in Johnson City, bizarre things are said to happen. According to reader Brittany:

There are two stories. The first story is that a man and a woman were at the end of the exit and got robbed my a hobo. The hobo stabbed the girl in the chest and the girl was about to die so the man started pushing the car up the exit to get help but they never made it. The other story is that a man and his wife was at the end of the exit and their car broke down, so he started pushing it back up the exit and a car struck them and killed them. When you go to the exit if you go to the bottom and put your car in neutral and take your foot of the brake your car rolls back up the exit to the interstate. It's said that its the mans ghost pushing you back up the exit. Some people say that if you do it long enough that the windows get fogged up and you can see the mans hand prints where he is pushing you.

Brittany has tried this before, and says that it actually works!

Wampus Cat Sighting in Knoxville

Reader Jimmy sends me this account of the infamous Wampus Cat:

I was looking around the internet for any ghost sightings in the Clinton/Oak Ridge area and came across your site. I read about the Wampus cat of East Tennessee and it reminded me about something my girlfriend told me, which I'd like to relay to you.

During the school year, she lives in Strong Hall on the UT campus. One night while we were at her place, I was talking about how I was walking back to my dorm (Greve Hall) with a friend of mine. I was beside him, but very slightly ahead. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw what appeared to be a man in ablack cloak walk up to my friend and sort of lean into him, almost like he was going to put his hand on my friend's shoulder. Only when his hand fell on my friend's shoulder, he simply disappeared. I will admit that during this time I was a bit tired from studying for an exam, and my friend says he felt nothing, but that's neither here nor there.

After telling my girlfriend this story, she told me that during the first week of school she looked out her ground-floor window toward the corner of 16th and Cumberland, and saw what appeared to be a human-sized cat walking on its hind legs, with glowing eyes. I don't remember the details she gave me, as far ashow long it was there or how long she saw it. She's asleep right now else I'd ask her for more details, but I wanted to let you know about that before I went to sleep and forgot all about it.

It should be noted that my girlfriend came down from Minnesota for school, and I have no reason to believe she would try to trick me by reading about the Wampus cat and then trying to pretend she saw it. We're very close and I have no reason to believe she would lie to me.

Call for Volunteers

As you've probably noticed, my contributions to this blog have been minimal over the past couple of months. The reason for this is that I am now in Boone, NC, attending graduate school, and thus am not able to visit Tennessee and do ghost hunts as frequently. I still do them whenever I can, but that is sadly not as often as I'd like.

When I first started this blog, I issued a call for volunteers to contribute to this blog. I received a few responses, and was able to sign up a few people. I'd love to add more, however. So here's the deal: if you live in Tennessee (or visit frequently), have an interest in the paranormal, are literate, and visit haunted sites frequently (or simply know a lot of interesting ghost stories you'd like to share), you are cordially invited to become a contributor to this blog. No experience, or even a digital camera necessary (though photos are always good!).

Over the past few months, this blog has grown considerably. Now, it is averaging around 75 hits a day - a pretty good showing for a blog dedicated to ghost stories in only one state and that is updated only a couple times a month. With more entries and info, I am certain we can build on that number substantially.

I'd particularly like to get some contributors from West Tennessee, an area that has been neglected here, though anywhere in the state is good. If you're interested, simply shoot me an e-mail at john@johnnorrisbrown.com, and I will be more than happy to sign you on as a contributor!

Knoxville Ghost Hunting

I, along with the usual gang, returned to Seven Islands Church last night. This was the first time we had been since February. Our experience this time was very much like our previous visit; nothing really notable, but lots of orbs in our photographs (click on a picture to see it full size):

After visiting Seven Islands, we headed to Old Gray Cemetery, one of Knoxville's oldest graveyards. I had been here several times before (including this time. Again, we did not see or experience much, but did get some orb infested photos:

Holladay Poltergeist

Reader Bobby writes of an experience he had about 30 years ago:

Back in the early 70's, I was a early male teenager, (about 14) and my stepfather was a Memphis Policeman. My stepfather had a friend, who was also a policeman, that had some property in Holladay, TN, in Benton County, that had an old farmhouse on it. My dad bought some land next to his that had a unlivable shack on it, to build on for his retirement. We would go there on weekends, holidays, and vacations to restore the shack to a livable condition. We would stay our friends farmhouse while the work was being done over many months time. That summer, I convinced my parents to let me stay in the friends old farmhouse by myself for the summer alone, since I was so helpful with the work and gardening.

I don't remember how many days transpired when (or in what order) unexplainable things started to happen. I slept in the main bedroom, and just as I was dozing off one night, the bedspread and sheet were suddenly and forcefully whisked off the bed, toward the foot of the bed. I remembered having the linens tightly snug around my neck, and had been yanked from my hands!

The next morning, I heard a loud and fast knock at the front door, which really surprised me because no one locally to my knowledge knew I was staying there. So I sprung out of bed to answer the door, to find there was no one there. I went outside try to catch a prankster, to no avail. The closest neighbor is at least a halfmile away.

When I tried to go back inside, the door was locked! I had left the main door unlocked and open, because the front door had a screened storm door. While standing there with screened door held open by resting on my back, the screened door reared back on its' own power and slammed into me so hard it made me dizzy. I then heard footsteps that sounded like heavy boots marching along the long front porch. I then looked under the porch expecting to see the source of the sounds, but there was nothing there.

Later, I was in the kitchen making breakfast, when I felt a strong yank on my back beltloop so hard it threw me off balance. I looked back startled and saw nothing there. Then, the refrigerator opened by itself.

After breakfast, I would always make the bed. I purposely wouldn't sit on the bed after making it, because there was a chair next to the bed. One day, I went to the bedroom for something and saw a definite imprint on the bed where someone had been sitting! That really freaked me out.

After hours of boredom, (because I didn't have a tv)I would repeatedly read the same magazines and newspapers. Once, after reading the newspaper, I folded it up and put it on the coffee table, and began to read another mag that I had laying on my lap, when I felt a stinging slap on my forehead and saw the newspaper that I had just laid on the table fall into my lap on top of the magazine. Then, from the same position I saw the curtains in the same room begin to flop around like something was grabbing the tails of them and whipping them towards the ceiling. At first I thought the window blew open, but after checking the closed window, I went out side to see if the wind had picked up, but it was calm.

Another day while making breakfast, I heard what sounded like a truck pulling up outside and driving slowly on the gravel drive towards the garden in the back of the house and heard voices talking to each other above the sound of the truck. I looked out the kitchen window to the garden in the back and saw an old lady that looked like 'Granny' on 'The Beverley Hillbillies' in the garden (wearing heavy boots) holding a basket and looking down as if to pick something. There was no vehicle out there. I thought, "Someone is here, and they're not aware of my staying here". So I quickly went out the backdoor to see who she was to introduce myself. I purposely checked to make sure I didn't lock myself out (ha-ha). As soon as it took me to open the door and walk out onto the back porch, there was no one there! I walk all around the back area, around an old tractor shed, nothing. I became very scared and nervous walking back to the house. When I tried to open the kitchen door, it was locked!

These are just some of the things I saw while staying in that farmhouse. The total amount of time I stayed there was two weeks, so the frequency was pretty often.

Ghosts & Spirits Wins Award

I am honored to have been recognized by the Occidental Folklore Society for my writing on the Phantom Monk of Charleston, TN. Before it became a private residence we held our haunted house there on Halloween. One Halloween a few of us were waiting for the man to come unlock the house and we heard someone already inside. Walking around making all kinds of noise. When the man arrived we told him what we heard. He assured us that it was impossible for anyone to be in there as he had the only key. Just as he was unlocking the door something slammed against it from inside. When he finally got it opened there was nothing there. We did have our haunted house that night but I never strayed from my friends. And I never went back.

I don't blame you!

Jackson Area Hauntings

I haven't updated this blog in a long while, for which I apologize. I was on a very relaxing vacation. But now I am back and ready to go to work...

Reader Kimberly from Jackson offers some ghost stories from her area:

*Harts Bridge Road (South Jackson)

- Only a few years ago, a girl and her boyfriend were below one of the bridges on Harts Bridge Road, when her father caught them. Her father and her boyfriend got into a fight and her father pulled a knife and stabbed her boyfriend. After her boyfriend was taken to the hospital, she thought he was dead and jumped off the bridge and killed herself. Every now and then, if you go out there at night, you can see her ghost floating across the bridge.

*Bascom Road (North Jackson)

- There is an old concrete bridge on Bascom Road where slaves were hung. If you drive onto the bridge and stop, your car goes dead and will not start back up until someone walks across the bridge and back. As you get the middle of the bridge, no matter how hot it is outside, you will feel a very cold spot. So if you are ever on Bascom Road DO NOT STOP ON A BRIDGE.

*Britton Lane Battlefield (Denmark Tennessee)

- At Britton Lane Battlefield, if you go at night, after the battlefield is closed and sit outside for a while, you can hear the battle cries of the soldiers from the Civil War.

Do You Believe in Ghosts?

In news of interest to us ghost enthusiasts, a Gallup poll released today indicates that 32% of adults believe that "ghosts/spirits of dead people can come back," 48% do not, and 19% are undecided. Her and a few other people went to Hope Hill Cemetery, and she kinda dared me to go in it the dollhouse. I stepped my right foot in and got this really eerie feeling about it and jumped right back out. I was ready to go right then. Well, we started heading back to the cars and i trip over something and we didn't know what. But the next day I woke up and I couldn't even use my foot. It was the SAME foot I stepped inside the dollhouse... and until this day I cannot move 2 of my toes. I went to the doctor and he said nothing is broke or anything. I refuse to go back to that place even though all my friends wanna go and see what I've been talking about. There's some serious activity at that place. I really believe it, and anyone that disrespects that little girls area will pay for it.

I guess those "Keep out after dark" signs at the cemetery are as much for the safety of the visitors as they are for the graves.

The Truth About the Parrotsville Plane Crash

According to legend, the Cocke County Memorial Building in Newport is haunted the ghosts of passengers killed in a plane crash that occurred in nearby Parrotsville years ago. Rich, a reader of this site, was kind enough to do some research on the plane crash:

After reading the account of the bodies stored in Newport after a plane crash in Parrotsville I did further research that reveals the crash occurred on July 9, 1964, @ aprox 6:15 PM.

United Airlines flight # 823 (reg # N7405) was a Vickers Viscount 745D on route from Philly PA to Huntsville AL. with 35 passengers and 4 crew. All were killed.

The plane crashed 2 miles northeast of Parrottsville after experiencing an uncontrollable fire of unknown origin which started below the passenger floor and eventually involved the passenger cabin. One passenger died after free-falling out of the No. 4 emergency escape window of the plane in an attempt to escape the onboard fire. The ignition source was never determined, but it is thought the plane's battery or something in a passenger's luggage caused the fire. Testing revealed lethal amounts of CO2 could be discharged into the cockpit instead of the lower baggage compartment. The plane was seen flying erratically and the fire eventually burned through the controls. It is likely the crew was unconscious by then.

I just thought you would want the correct info for this occurrence.

I am going to try to inspect the crash site and get some info from the natives. I live about 20 miles from there.

Thank you very much, Rich. We're always interested in learning more about legends, and myself and many readers would be intrigued to learn anything else you may uncover.

Gallatin's Fairvue Mansion

Gallatin's most well known story of the supernatural may be the unusual disappearance of David Lang, but that is not the city's only mystery. A reader, who wishes to be identified only as "Tennessee Tuxedo," shares the following:

Fairvue Mansion, the antebellum mansion at the "The Last Plantation," outside of Gallatin, is one of the most haunted homes in all of Tennessee. Fairvue Mansion was built by Isaac Franklin on a large plantation in 1832. The New Orleans-style home sits on a picturesque bluff on Old Hickory Lake. The mansion served as a Union Army hospital during the Civil War. Three families have lived in the mansion during its existence and was vacant for several years in the early 1900s.

The last owner of Fairvue was Mrs. Ellen Weymss, a grand lady who lived to be 104 years old before passing on a few years ago. "Ms. Ellen", as she like to be called, entertained her church congregation once a year and would allow them to wander the halls and floors of Fairvue. She said that there were always a lot of strange happenings and noises occurring in her home. Guests have claimed to have seen Civil War era soldiers walking up and down the stairs. There is blood stains covering the stairs and between the 2nd and 3rd floors, there is a blood stain that has reappeared out of nowhere after being cleaned off of the stair landing.

One guest told of how he had finished playing poker and enjoying drinks, when he encountered a ghost in the help quarters on the back stairwell. He said he had a conversation with the ghost until dawn. Of course the drink might have affected that conversation. Many other guests have reported to have seen many other ghosts around the Fairvue property. That is no surprise, as Fairvue was the largest slave labor plantation in the United States in the early and mid 1800s. Slave quarters align the road into the "Last Plantation" that leads to the Fairvue Mansion.

"Ms. Ellen" told people that there was only one ghost that bothered her over the 60 years or so she made Fairvue Mansion her home. It was the ghost of a young girl who rode her tricycle up and down the halls of Fairvue every night. Ms. Ellen said it bothered her because it was a shame for anyone to have died so young. What bothered her the most was that in her research of the Mansion and the of the previous owners, there was no mention of a young girl living there or dying there. She nor anyone else with knowledge of Fairvue Mansion can explain the ghost of the young girl riding her tricycle up and down the halls of Fairvue Mansion.

Very strange, indeed.
