Sensabaugh Tunnel

Having lived most of my life in the less than famed Kingsport, Tennessee I have become accustomed to not having much to brag about the city. One thing, however, that I can say about the city is that is houses one of the creepiest places that I have ever visited.

Sensabaugh tunnel is located just outside downtown Kingsport. Very near other supposed haunts, Long Island, Rotherwood Mansion, and the wandering Hugh Hamblin ghost. The drive at night to the tunnel is almost as scary as the tunnel itself, winding roads that are not lit at all, and very near the river, with flood zone signs everywhere. Somewhat hard to find, but the trip is well worth it.

Once you turn on the road that the tunnel is on, for me at least, you get an odd creepy feeling. One you first catch glimpse of the tunnel it is a very imposing structure. Not that big, but it just seems out of place on this backwoods road. Littered with graffiti, the tunnel itself seems like a place right out of a scary movie. As you enter the tunnel, one thing is for sure, not only are you worried about spotting the famed baby ghost, or Mr. Sensabaugh himself, but also any oncoming cars. The tunnel is one lane and one lane only. Most stories while all not being the same still have the same underlying story. Mr. Sensabaugh killed a baby, by drowning it in the nearby creek. There is a creek, so that tends to be very reassuring to most people that the entire story is true. What is very interesting about the creek is that on any night where there has been any substantial rain, the creek will flood the tunnel, which adds to the creepiness.

I have been to the tunnel around six times in my young life. Every time it was very creepy. Nothing major of paranormal happenings occurred, but still a very creepy trip nonetheless. I do tend to believe that the tunnel is small town hype, but the tunnel is indeed a very ominous thing that I suggest you visit.

Interestingly enough, the tunnel is pretty famous. It has even been featured on George Noory's Coast to Coast web site. http://www.coasttocoastam.com/gen/page231.html

A couple years back, I had some friends that lived on the road right before you get to the tunnel. We decided that was the perfect place for a Haloween party. We were all standing around drinking beer and throwing fireworks into the tunnel, and doing other stupid things that people tend to do when they are drunk. We didn't see anything extraordinary, but despite the fact that is was fairly warm that night, we all had a pretty good sense of chills around 10pm. O wind blew through the tunnel and none of us were sure what we heard on it, but we did get our asses inside the house after that!

This is of some interest to me. My mother was born a Sensabaugh, and I grew up playing in and around this tunnel. I am not sure I ever heard this story. I would very much like to know which "Mr. Sensabaugh" supposedly drowned a baby here and when? If anyone has the entire story/legend, and could forward me a copy I would greatly appreciate it. I may be reached at:

Thank you

I have lived in Kingsport all of my live now (21 years) and made serveral trips though the tunnel. I will admit that the first time I went though it, did the whole stop your car deal, yeah it was a little creepy. Since then I have walked through the tunnel by myself and seen/felt nothing. I have also heard that the tunnel that you drive through is not the real tunnel. The actual Sensabaugh Tunnal is on the road before you get to the fork where you turn left, in the steepest "dip." There is a clearing where you can pull off the road and walk through it.

Me and my friend ang went to the tunnel, the little one on 10-28-05.
we can hear foot steps at the entrance that we thought may have been water, on getting down to the other end where the water is actully moving over rocks, you can't hear a thing. It also sounds like a conversation is taking place around you. there is also places where the water moves in the beginning and end of the tunnel but no water moves in the middle. we were there at 2pm. on a sunny day and it is freezing in there.

Okay... I just got back about an hour ago from the tunnel... And we drove around for a while, and finally found it. And we drove through it, and looked and everything and nothing happened... But there were so many cars going through that we didn't get the chance to turn the car off... But I want to know where the OTHER tunnel(s) is at.

Email me at thstatorz143@aol.com or xokrazikissxo@yahoo.com

Please and thank you. We really want to go to this other tunnel. Thank you!! =)

the friday before halloween, october 05', my daughter, my neice, and myself visited the tunnel around 11:00 pm. THE ACTUAL TUNNEL..NOT THE DRIVETHRU TUNNEL. while in the middle of the tunnel, we could here whispers that seemed to keep getting closer as we went further through; my boyfriend (sitting in the car) had the headlights shining so we could see our way through the tunnel, as a joke he turned them off. as soon as he did the whispers became louder and closer and then all of a sudden a light appeared at the far end of the tunnel. needless to say, we got out of there quicker than when we went in. we will go back as soon as we can muster up the courage to do so. because we just like to get the crap scared out of us. if any one knows any other scary places please post them on this website.

I grew up in Kingsport & I have been up there probably 4 times. We were there only twice after dark & once it was midnight & that was the only time we heard/saw anything. We saw what I would call an apparition of a man & we could distinctly hear a baby crying. Of course my boyfriend at the time was trying to explain it away as an underground water table and what were were hearing that sounded like crying was water running under the ground, but when he saw the white shape that looked like a man on the other side of the tunnel he ran like hell back to the car with us. A little creepy, but fun for teenagers, kind of like 5 caves.

My name is Daniel Gladson, I have been to all the tunnels and have experienced nothing in any of them. The tunnel on Sensabaugh Hollow Rd. is a great place to scare people but is not scary at all, but if you are lookin for a great place to drift or to find flashlights or knives or stuff like that its a great place to go. I have been there on many occasions and never heard a baby cry, seen a figure of a man, or anything else that is supposed to happen, I myself think its just an old wise tell that is made up just to scare teens, because if u think about it its a great place to go "get some" if u know what i mean, but if You want a good thrill go visit Rotherwood Mansion now that my friends is a spine tingling thrill.

PEACE!

Hello, My grandparents have lived in Kingsport for about 6 years now and I have visited it only once with my father and his girlfriend. It was late at night, dark as hell and we went into the tunnel, we started to see shadows, then shortly after it ended we were freaked and we started to hear this baby crying really horridly so we ran out. when my dad got out of the tunnel, he had blood all over his hands. My dads girlfriend was crying in fright, so we had to leave. we told everybody and we went back the next day, there were no red stuff anywhere. This sorta thing happens all the time, my grandparents house is haunted, she lives near Bristol.

I have pictures of ghosts in that tunnel. That tunnel is nothing but EVIL!! If you scare easily, do NOT go to the tunnel. Do NOT provoke the spirits in ANY way shape or FORM. Each time I go, you can feel the spirit...it is getting stronger. I was with paranormal investigaters and you would be surprised at what they found. I would advise you to be careful going to this tunnel and do NOT go alone or at night. It is VERY dangerous.

go there to see the pictures.

I will say that no baby was drowned in the tunnel , the real tunnel is on Sensabaugh road and the real story has to do with a close by cave a famialy and some mad as hell indians .

I live in Kingsport and have my whole life. Also plan on not leaving, mainly because this place is something to talk about. No there isn't bars and clubs around every cornor and there isn't "talked about" places. However, that's what makes this place more then great. We can still leave our doors unlocked and not have to worry about someone robbing us for all we're worth. We can leave our kids out in the front yard to play with the kids down the road and know they'll be safe and not kidnapped in a blink of an eye. None the less, not to be mean, don't down kingsport and then turn around and say..."but wait listen to this crazy spooky story that I'm so proud of..." Besides that, you're going to the wrong tunnel. You're going to the new sensabaugh tunnel. The one that's on the main road and cars can still pass in. That's not the one that's haunted. And the story you told isn't the story. Let me just tell you. My last name...Sensabaugh and this is how it goes and where it's at. (don't believe me do your research and see) Back in the early 1920's Mr. Sensabaugh (like me great-great-great uncle) and his wife, and newborn son lived right down the road in a small white house. He one night had gotten pretty drunk and went crazy. Thinking his wife was leaving him and taking their son with them he came after her with a kife stabbing her twice before she managed to get away and run with their son to the nearby tunnel where she could run in the dark and on the other side were houses. He, however, followed them and they never made it to the other side. He stabbed her to death and then drowned the baby. Leaving them both lying in the tunnel. He then went back to his house where he too took his own life. Now, if you want to go to the tunnel (the real one) you need 4 wheel drive or you brave souls can walk...I suggest you drive. I've done this and i will tell you my experience. The real tunnel is located down big elm road however you must turn off into what looks like a field and follow the path through the woods. You will be going in a creek the majority of the way. Big trucks will not fit in the tunnel, It's way to small and low riden cars or trucks shouldn't attempt it either. Once you're inside, roll your windows up and lock your doors. Turn your lights off and then your car. Take the keys out of the ignition. Wait for 10 mins then try to start your car. it won't start no matter what you do. look behind you and you will see a white "apperance" coming towards you. When it seems that it's right there at your car close enough to touch try your car again and it will start. Get off big elm road and look at the side of your car where you will see baby hand prints. If you want (which is what me and my family did) put baby powder all over your car. It makes he hand prints eaiser to see and honestly it will scare the hell out of you. Now if you want a real treat and honestly I will never do this again because of everything that happened. Wait til real late one night and go the house where the Semsabaugh's lived. it's right beside the new sensabaugh tunnel and trust me you'll know it when you see it. Becareful tho you'll get arrested if caught because it's private property, and since it was a murder case the city police still have the house, we have no control over it or we would tear it down. Anyway take a recorder and video camra, don't remember the flashlights. You won't see anything but just kick back and relax and you'll understand what i'm talking about. All you'll hear after being there a while is foot steps and hammering. You may feel things walk by...this would be Mr. Sensabaugh. Take your tapes home and listen closly. We could make out what he was saying in the back grounds which was "Leave" and "death's amoung you" "Run to the tunnel" and lastly "My baby...my family..." and that was it. Pretty creepy if you ask me. Have fun. But be warned!

I lived in unicoi county my entire life and now go to school at ETSU. and frequently have experiences with the "paranormal" I've seen and heard things far worse than this tunnel so i know i wasnt makeing anything up or letting my immagination get to me.
my friends and i went to the "fake, wrong, non-haunted" tunnel. My buddy insisted on constantly cussing out, calling out, and making fun of Mr. Sensabaugh. I thought it was funny and got out of the car with my friend while the others stayed back in the car.
Once outside the car, my friend and i walked through the tunnel and while on the way back i saw a huge dark shadow develop on the ground and start following us. we ran back to the car and left after going to view the mansion again.
I'm going back tonight to attempt to find the "actual haunted" tunnel. my 4x4 tacoma should get to this easily. so while i have no information on the first tunnel yet, i know that the ellegid fake tunnel is indeed inhabited by a presence of dark background. And for those who say they go to screw their girlfriends in the tunnel, your full of shit.
