Bethbirei Church

NOTE: It has been brought to my attention that Bethberei Church has been the victim of vandalism. I, nor my website in anyway condone these activities, and we sincerely hope that any such activity is stopped and those involved are prosecuted to the highest extent of the law. As always, if you chose to visit this site, please exercise the utmost respect.

Bethbirei Presbyterian Church, located on Bethbirei Road just outside of Lewisburg, TN, is located not far from Chapel Hill. The church has existed since 1810.

Allegedly, the church and the area around it is a haven of paranormal activity. Among the legends are:

* A Bible that sits in the church that cannot be moved (this is a rather generic legend told about various churches).

* Tombstones that give off a bizarre green glow when struck by moonlight.

* Strange figures that can be seen in the windows of the church, looking out at visitors.

* A giant, man-like creature that roams the woods around the church.

* Strange emotions affecting visitors, ranging from terror to sadness, from anger to unwelcomeness.

The cemetery that surrounds the church also extends across the road, where it extends into the woods. The grave are very old, some dating back to the early 1800s and before. Reportedly, the cemetery existed before the road, and some graves were not moved when the road was built. This, say some, is one reason for the disgruntled spirits that reside here.

On April 23, after visiting Chapel Hill, Todd, Stefanie, and myself visited this church. We arrived at about 9:45 CST, and stayed for approximately 20 minutes. We explored the cemetery, particularly the part across the road. The area is definately bizarre. During our time there, it felt as though my stress level increased substantially. Todd reported getting a sense of being unwelcome there. We did not see the beast that is supposed to reside in the area, but we heard strange growling noises in the woods, and the movement of what sounded like a large animal. After 20 minutes, we were quite ready to leave.

Upon getting into the car, we drove slowly down Bethbirei Road, looking at the cemetery. Suddenly, our attention was caught by a tombstone in the cemetery (on the church side of the road) that really did give off a creepy, green glow. Not sure to make of what we had seen, we drove by again, and it did indeed give off that green glow. We elected not to drive past again.

I took these photos. Nothing major to report, but some orbs did show up, as you can see:

It's been many years since my friend and I went to the church, during the day time. When we arrived no one was at the church, but the back door was opened with the light on. We did not look to see if anyon e was their do to being a little apprhensive. We also went across the road to look at the graves. Many were sunck in due to setteling.I did notice that some of the grave stones dated back to the late 1700's.We didn't stay their very long. It gave us a real uneasy feeling.Maybe someday I'll go back at night.

I would like to say that the church is patrolled by the Marshall county sheriff's department. Anyone caught tresspassing inside and around the cemetries causing vandalism will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent.
The web site has caused countless acts of vandalism upon the church and properties. It has hurt and disgusted many of the members that still atend the church. People who take these pictures and write stories about the church need to think of those whom it affects before they print any false material that slanders the name of a place of worship. They need to worry about others instead of worrying about how to become famous by printing false and misleading material.
I have been told that visitors are welcome at Sunday morning worship.

First off, I would like to say that it is not my intent to slander the church or hurt anyone who attends it. I am merely retelling a story that I found to be interesting. I do not claim the story is true, and am, in fact, skeptical. Having said that, it is just a simple story that is fun to tell around Halloween or a campfire. Nothing more, nothing less.

I do not condone acts of vandalism, and I hope that those responsible are prosecuted to the fullest extent. I regret that such acts have happened, and have now added a disclaimer to this post and the main one expressing my desire that they be stopped.

I am not responsible for these acts as I did not commit them. They were committed by idiots who deserve to be arrested.

I want to close by saying I sincerely wish no disrespect toward anyone. I just thought this story was interesting, and wanted to share.

I'am a Bethberei neighbor and i have seen alot of weird things in my day. I have lived on Bethberei Rd. for 15yrs. Just the other day I took my to children down there to walk around and there was some very strange sounds coming from the church. My 3yr. daughter told me that she felt like someone was pulling her shirt. When we went to leave the gate door was open and i shut it as we came in, like something did not want us to leave. I have never got an unwelcome feeling being there. We love visitors but please give respect to our history. Someday I will be buried there as well as my children. So please visit! And dont touch or destroy!

I visited Bethbirei Church three times within a time period of a couple months during the summer of 2000.

My first visit, I was accompanied by an ex-girlfriend, and her father & brother. The visit was purely a simple stop and go with our car. On our drive past the church around 900pm, the car became cold engine temperature dropped immediately into cold and began to spudder. Car was in perfect condition at the time.

My second visit, I was accompanied by 4 other individuals. 2 of which never entered the church. While the other 2 and I entered the church close to midnight. The mood of the church was very dark and unwelcoming. While there, the inside was quite warm. But as soon as we walked up the aisles to the front, I became intensely cold. One of my companions took my place, and looked around. When observing the back stairway in the chapel. She claimed to have seen a figure walk of the platform, and what described the figure to have been committing a suicide hanging. My other companion also noticed that the above lighting fixture was swinging at the exact time. At that moment, we all ran out.

On my third visit with 4 individuals, 2 of which where the same on previous visits, we all entered the church around 1100pm. No major incidents, but still had a unwelcomig feeling. On the way out, we felt obligated to leave an offering for any troubles.

This has some heresay and also has some sketchy research. But information that I had gathered. The church has for a long time of bad history.

From what I know, the church's cementary used to be have an old slave church its grounds when the main church was first built. Supposedly, the slave church was burned down by Klan members. Instead of rebuilding it, the cementary was established. Due to poor record keeping, many grave stones where left blank.

Then I have heard rumors that the church is actually resting on the gathering grounds of an old witch coven. Rumors say that many members of the coven where buried in various spots around the area, only marked by tree stomps and rocks. Some say that the church lies on top of many of the witch graves.

Some say that dark figures have been seen walking in the cementary. Either of old slaves or the witches.

If anyone is so stupid to believe that a church, like Bethbirei, is haunted, then they must not have very good common sense. Of cousre, someone is going to feel uneasy in a dark and secluded place; especially one that has had false rumors spread throughout the town. More false rumors are being spread by this web site and its writer just so he can have his name known. The web site should be shut down for spreading more lies and suspicion upon a place of worship.
The writer and his friends documented that they did not do but a 20 minute field reaseach in the dark and took a couple of pictures. Did he bother talking to the church members or the countless numbers of couples that have been married at the church? Did he talk to those who have been raised up in the church and have had no such hauntings occur to them? No, he has no proof of this. He did not explore both sides of the situation, but rather spread "harmless campfire stories" as he has wrote just for fun. Well, his intentions may have been harmless but the website has caused more trouble to come to the church. The "harmless" stories cause others that have no regard for the welllbeing of the church to damage and destroy what has become precious to many others.
The members wish for the church to be there for many more years. If the writer cares anything about the church, he would please remove Bethbirei from his website.

My ancestors were some of the first ministers at this church and where there when it was started in 1810. I have visited the church and talked to some of the members, no one denies that strange things have happened there, and I have had a couple of problems with video and camera equipment while taking pictures there. All in all the church and surrounding grounds are quiet and peaceful and I have always had a sense of welcome. My children have visited great great great grandparents graves there and have never had anything but peaceful feelings. I have a healthy respect for the church and its members (living and dead) and I believe as long as you do too, you will be treated with the same. If someone made a public freak show out of where your family is buried that resulted in damage to your family graves you might better understand that the unwanted feeling is probably guilt for being somewhere that is public by law but private by spirit. And as far as the strange things that occur there, well I was told once by a deputy sheriff that “The Old Church takes care of itself” By all means go visit this wonderful little church, but go during the day when the natural wildlife is not out roaming the woods and when respectful people visit Churches and Graveyards.

Well first off, it looks like a normal old ass church out in the sticks. Its always creepy at nighttime regardless of the ghost stories. That is the case with just about anywhere. out of respect, nobody should flirt with the idea of invading the church like that just for kicks. It's really crossing the line. But its just the typical drunken redneck teenagers who you would only find in towns like L-burg and Chapel Hill.(I think there's something in the water) I made a funny! But they don't know any better. They are oblivious to the fact that if you go to a place that is supposedly haunted with your mind set on witnessing the supernatural, your mind is powerful enough to make you believe you really are seeing shit.

Thank you for having this website. I have been there several times with friends only to look around the place both day and night. There is definately a strange and (I'm sorry to say) a dark 'spiritual' uniqueness to it. The local Chapel Hill residents told me where it was and gave me a little history behind it. It's also very interesting to read what other people have experienced b/c I had similar happenings there. Let's just say I would get a very unsettling feeling just sitting in the car in front of the church. Yeah we can scare ourselves into being scared but there is something to be said about a 'gut feeling'. If you go there be respectful of the church and the surroundings.....I'm just thankful the place is still there to enjoy after all these years for both the 'ghosthunters' and worshipers. thanks

I am a member of the Bethbirei Presbyterian Church. I have felt nothing but love and friendship every time I have been in the church, both day and night. My wife and I were married in the church and I do not believe evil spirits haunt the church. We are proud of our church and invite you all to our services on the first and third Sunday of each month. I believe if you attend, you will find that the only spirit at the church is the Holy Spirit.

I would like to ask the writer of this website what he believes the purpose of having ghost stories written about a church promotes? Curiosity?
It may not have been your intention to cause harm or damage by telling these stories, but many who read them do not see them as being just "campfire stories". Many, especially the young and naive, take them as having some truth to them. You may not have noticed, but you have had many others respond to your writings about the church in a disrespectful manner. I do believe that you wrote about the chuch because you were curious, and wanted to share the rumors that you heard with others.
I know that people will talk regardless about such rumors. This website (no matter how harmless you think it is) gives many who are not in the local area the idea to come to this peaceful place and destory it. On what grounds? Just because they thought they saw a ghost or heard from others that the church is haunted. I am not saying that everyone would do this, but there is much proof to my claim. Countless times the church has been ransacked and robbed, and the church members have been left to clean it up. It seems that this has unfortunatly happened again.

Bethbirei Presbyterian Church was broken into on Friday July 14, 2006. The minors damanged the front door in order to gain entrance as well as the back door to the Sunday school room. Pictures were stolen that show the history of church. The Bible, which has been replaced many times, was also stolen. Fortunately, the Marshall County police department was patrolling the area, and saw the minors taking items from the church. The policeman follwed the minors, and they were arrested.

I wanted to post this information for the writer as well as anyone else who reads this website. Myself and others ask the writer to please remove Bethbirei Church from this website. A simple disclaimer is not enough. Rumors lead to suspision then fear. Many who feel fear take action, which can lead to the destruction of what they fear or do not understand.
I wanted anyone who writes and talks about the church being haunted to realize that it is a sacred place for those to come together to worship the glory of God and find peace in life. The congregation does not dicourage anyone from visiting or attending the church. All are welcome and are asked to please respect the church.

I have been going to Bethbirei church for more than 50 years. I have been at the church all hours of the nights and morning. I have never seen any ghost or anything. I do not know who started this nonsense about Bethbirei being haunted but it is untrue. I wish that people would leave our church alone and quit destroying God's property. If the church was haunted, you could come to worship on Sunday First and Third Sunday and Sunday school on Second and Fourth Sunday and see for yourself instead of breaking in the church at all hours of the night. I am sure if you came to worship it would do you some good and you would learn that destroying property is against the law. If it was up to me, people who destroyed Church property would go to jail. People who say the church is haunted are lieing. If you go to church, you would realize that lying is a sin as well as breaking and entering.

I am a member of the Bethbirei Church. I love this church and love the history behind this church. I have always felt love, friendship and the holy spirit in this place. I will be buried in this graveyard someday and many of my ancestors are buried there now. Can you imagine how I feel when I read these stories about these ghosts in this graveyard? If there is a spirit in the graveyard it is my sweet grandparents and there parents. Please if you decide to visit this special place have respect for the people that are buried there for they were some very good people and deserve respect. My comment on being felt unwelcome at this spot at night is because your instinct is to feel unwelcome at any spot at night that is not open to the public. Please feel free to visit us at our church service at 9:00 a.m. the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. We welcome you and will answer any questions that you might have about our church. Thanks

I just want to say that I have visited the church to see if the rumors of it being haunted are true. But I respect it and any church that I visit, for worship or investigation. I admit that my only fault was that I should have contacted the church first before visiting.

But I would like to talk to someone who is a historian to the church or community. I have heard rumors that the church was built on cursed land. Church members going mad inside the church. But would like to know the truth.

Reading over this comment board, I'm not happy with the way "religious" members speak to people that want to visit the church/graves for whatever reason. It is rude of you to assume that anyone that is looking for ghosts/spirts are going to distroy property. Most people are respectful of religious places/things. Yes, kids in general will distroy things and the local police should be on top of this problem. The grave yard is a public place and could be distoryed day or night. Folklore is just that, stories of experiences, real or imagined,by people that have visited the church and grounds. The internet is also free to the public and can post what ever the web designer wants within the law. Last I checked, talking about ghost stories was not against the law.

It is true that many who visit the church are not there to do harm, but what is the harm with speaking to the church members before concluding that the church is haunted. Many who attend love the church and are only there to worship. You may wonder why many have spoke so harshly against this website. It is because so much has been destroyed over the years. It has been difficult for church members to deal with. It is only fair that they wish to protect the church and its' reputation. By saying that it is rude for them to voice their opionion and state what they believe is unfair. This website clearly voices its own opionion about the church without much evidence or proof. The only proof is hearsay and a short fieldtrip.

People are free to say or write anything they please. The only problem with this website that I have is that the writer did not speak with church members before printing his material. He did not investigate both sides of the story before putting his findings on the website for all to see.
I would have had more respect if he had. The only thing that he did say was that "the church memebers deny any such hauntings".
But he does not have any proof of talking to any church members nor do any church members remember him speaking to them.

All I am saying is that people should investigate both sides of a sitution before they print misleading material that could otherwise hurt the reputation of a beloved church. Talking about ghost stories should just be for fun, but when it includes talking about a clearly peaceful church being haunted, the church members have a right to say what they believe just as much as the writer of this website does.

In case you weren't aware, church members are not excluded from first amendment rights. They have just as much right to voice their opinion as any other person who has logged onto this website.
However, might I suggest that you learn how to spell before you print your next opinion if you plan to be taken seriously. (Distroy)?
The correct spelling is destroy. Source - Webster's Dictionary

Well, not that I care if there is a haunted church, cemetary, school, playground, hospital or anything else for that matter...there is nothing wrong with people voicing their opinions. When your mind is open to many things, you may see or experience certain things, and as far as people "destroying" Gods property...That place is nothing but a building, the CHURCH is the people. NOT the place they worship...you could worship in a cave and it would be the same thing...anyway, if people are curious, then let them be curious as long as they are not disturbing the land and causing damage....that is just my opinion

OF COURSE DOIN SO DURING THE NIGHT, YOU TEND TO GET A LITTLE FEELING IN YOUR GUT, BUT HEY YOUR IN A CEMETARY THAT'S SUPPOSINGLEY HAUNTED. ONLY ONE OF MY FRIENDS HAD THE BALLS TO GO INSIDE THE THE GATE WHERE THE CHURCH IS AT, WHILE THE REST OF US JUST PARKED IN FRONT AND LOOKED AROUND FROM OUTSIDE THE GATE. WE MADE SURE MOT TO TOUCH OR HARM ANYTHING, AND WENT FORTH WITH OUR INVESTIGATION IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER... BUT I JUST DIDN'T SEE, HEAR, OR FEEL ANYTHING.

I am the guy that Freddy C was talkin bout But I don't see it as haveing balls or being brave the way I saw it was these people that are under the ground (god rest them)have no ill will towards me
and there is nothing to be scared of at all and when people get scared as Freddy C said later that night when we left from the church
"sometimes when people are scared they see things that aren't really there" and to be honest I didn't see anything worth being scared of and the way I saw it was man all the people in here had a story most of them probably didn't get to tell and the way and I know I wanna be remembered and if somebody is going to vandalize stuff 1st off of course it ain't right 2nd off its eraseing one of these peoples last testimonies proveing that they were here
As I walked through that graveyard
I had nothing but respect
and I really wasn't scared
I would be up for going out there by myself anytime but I would prefer it to be night because I enjoyed it when I went last night
. and to all you who vandalize get a life I mean really whats so special bout breaking grave stones or tagging a church its not really proving anything aside from the fact that your pretty much stupid if you can't find anything to do that is more interesting than vandalism and ghost stories I mean really if you wanna wright stories wright them truthfully bout one of those peoples laying in there place(god bless them).
however I do realize if it was not for all the hype the place might not get visted as much as it does and the people wouldn't be able to let the many vistors know they once lived and they might have become forgotten outside a select few.

I didn't see anything the only thing I heard were dogs barking from nearby houses and honestly the only thing I felt was excitment to be able to see something that was supposedly haunted. I don't believe it is haunted. I also really enjoyed the vist.

The webmaster of this page made none of this up.... Local residents spread this around.
This church is a part of History in Marshall County. In the 7th grade at Lewisburg Middle, The classes take a field trip every year to go to the historic sites, including Bethbirei Church. In these classes they make clear both by teachers and church members present that it is not haunted.
It is an interesting place to visit. The church though sadly had to lock up different things in a glass covered case.
Police has cracked down a little more.
Be Respectful of our county's historic places.

On the other hand, putting blame on the webmaster for posting your "precious not haunted" church is bullshit. I don't think anyone should blame the owner of this blog for the damages done to Bethbirei (or any other) church. I grew up next door to Bethbirei church and can tell you that this vandalism has been going on long before this blog ever started. The people that vandalize are the same people that drive by your house in the middle of the night and take a baseball bat to your mailbox or try to tip over sleeping cows, NOT the people that go looking for spooks. I've been there many times over the last 20 years, it's a beautiful place, the congregation members are wonderful people and have always treated me well. The church has also treated me to some interesting things at night too. I've seen the strange lights through the windows, the large critters in the woods, the glowing of the cemetery, all of that, but I certainly wouldn't deface this property. The people that are looking for the spooks probably have a pretty healty fear of spooks, and wouldn't do anything stupid to make them mad.

There is no libel or defamation intended toward the members of Bethbirei Church by having the Church's legend posted on a website. If there is concern about libel and defamation, then the plaintiffs must charge most of the residence of MC. We've all grown up hearing the tales. Whether or not you choose to believe them is your prerogative. Historical artifacts and properties are a treasure. A way for us all to connect with our rich Southern heritage. A way to connect with our ancestors. The legend of the hauntings at Bethbirei are part of MC culture and heritage. While I say this, I strongly oppose trespassing, and therefore believe that trespassers should be prosecuted. I do not believe that this site is responsible for vandalism caused by delinquents. I find its intentions purely for entertainment purposes. After all, when the vandalism occurred, did you not sense digust in the community? We love the Church. Sadly, not everyone is raised to be respectful. For those few, we must forgive and show grace, as our Father forgives us and shows us grace.

I used to own land near the church when I was younger. I do not believe in ghosts. However, one rainy night I lost control of my vehicle. My truck skid right up to the gate of a set of headstones near the road. I felt embarrassed and ashamed that I had been so irresponsible. I then realized the oddity that there was no damage. After all, my vehicle was perfectly lined up and within a couple of inches from the iron gate. I felt a calmness and felt reassured that all was well. Eleven years later, I was feeling betrayed by someone close to me. Somehow, I felt drawn to the peaceful place. I pulled up in my car and just rolled down my window and closed my eyes. The wind seemed to play a lullaby. I felt a warm energy flow over me and after a couple of hours felt that same reassurance. I could have given the events a negative tonality. But it just feels peaceful to me. I have never been inside the church because I am a somewhat introverted. I hope that the members of this site and those of the church come to the same conclusion. Maybe you can withdraw the negative statements and put inviting ones in its place. Share positive stories. I know there are many. I have never commented on the web. However, I have never had such positive feelings for a place either. I can tell you from the 2 times I visited the grounds that they are hallowed. Let this place stand out from the others as a sacred place. I no longer live in Lewisburg. But I can tell you it needs such a place to be celebrated.

We also plan to go to the Amittyville house too. Ghost are just apparitions that cannot do anything to anyone and there is nothing that can stop me from taking in all the aspects that there are to seeing ghosts and feeling a presence. I dare something to happen!!!Give me your places along the Alabama/Tennesse line and onward to Saco, Maine and i will try to test and see what i myself can find.

okay, so I have heard stories about this church and of the bear creek church. And its kind of disrespectful to classify everyone who wishes to investigate these rumors as ignorant people who love to vandalize. The point of investigating a rumor is to see if there is any truth behind it, or if its all a big pile of crap. I have a great respect for the dead, and every time I go and take pictures I try to go during daylight hours and if I go during night time, I tend to ask around before going in. If there is one thing you should fear, its the living. Now if anyone knows how to get ahold of the church members, I would like to ask a few questions.

I am a very new neighbor to Bethbirei Road, and was immediately informed of the activity around the church. I have not (yet) visited the church, but out of respect for it's members (both living and passed), I intend to visit during a worship service, during the day and at night. Admittedly, I am intrigued by the stories that I have heard and read, and have always felt some sort of pull towards the paranormal. I would like to do my own investigating. And I can assure you that it would be done in a respectful manner and I would be careful not to disturb the grounds. However, I would like to offer a bit of advice: Remember that in this life, there are usually more haunted people than places. And to the Anonymous church member who continually blames the creator of this Web site for the church's recent vandalism: I think you give your young vandals too much credit when you assume that they would take time out of their busy, criminal schedules to read. Furthermore, just because people are curious and want to come visit your church doesn't mean that we would come with malicious intent. After all, what does it matter WHY we come to church so long as we come? Last I checked, God is perfectly capable of moving on the soul no matter what got it there. The Bible says that light does not commune with darkness, so if we are born again and carry the Spirit of the Lord with us everywhere we go then what have we to fear. Personally, I don't believe that anything that is not of God can exist with anything that is of God. That's why I say it's the person who is haunted. If it is true that we bring the spirit of praise & worship to the house of the Lord and that's the spirit that shows up, would it not stand to reason that other spirits could be brought as well. People usually find what they are looking for: If you continuously look for evil you will find it. I am looking for history, and can only hope that is all I find.
